I’m running the world’s most boring startup - and that’s awesome.

A website that helps you find accountants. Woof, maybe the most boring description of a website of all time.  Hey, I can admit it - I run a boring website! So, since I don’t feel like blogging about accountants, I thought I’d give you a quick post on my life. I’m currently traveling the country by myself and am in San Diego for a month.  I don’t know anyone here. Sam Parr, my partner inSam’s Listasked me if I was lonely. Here’s what I told him: Last night I went to this random networking dinner with strangers in San Diego. The service that set up the event is called Timeleft. It’s an app that connects a group of strangers in a city for an evening out. I found it because I saw an ad on Instagram: image for siteWho’d do that at 27? If you're Sam Parr, you think I'm a single depressed woman. And if you're my parents, you think I’m trying to ~find myself~. Both are embarrassingly inaccurate. I'm in San Diego for a month just for fun. Because I can. And because I wanted to be walking distance to a beach.  So I'm here by myself, without any friends. Back to my dinner with strangers. None of us know each other going into the dinner. We don't know each other's name, occupation, or what each of us looks like. We’re here because we saw the same ad on Instagram and signed up for Timeleft. We start the dinner going around sharing what we do for work.  By the way, when you sign up for Timeleft, you have to answer 30 personal and specific questions about yourself before getting matched with a group of people for dinner, so going into the conversations, I think we were all pretty comfortable sharing a bit more about ourselves compared to how you might talk to someone at your typical networking event.  When it was my turn to answer what I do, I somewhat stole the show to be honest with you (ha). I wasn't trying to one-up anyone, but after 3 people described their corporate job, you can imagine the “crowd’s” excitement when I talked aboutSam’s Listand how I’m building a company from scratch (let’s be honest, the bar was low).  Now, I'm not fired up about the accounting industry.. But I've been given a really freaking cool opportunity of building this company and it just so happens to be built for accountants (for now, at least).  When I explain what I do as a conglomerate of something I’m passionate about, mixed with the excitement of uncertainty, and the crazy faith in just going for it, it fired me up because I’m like hell ya, I got out of the depths of ridiculous "SOP's" and "KPI's" and "let's circle back next weeks", and I never want to look back!  What I didn't expect to come about from dinner with strangers is that I would be sharing with MORE strangers (you!) that I went to a dinner last night with strangers.  I’m super appreciative of my current set up and I want to selfishly see what happens to me and Sam’s List overtime.  Oh…and if you’re looking for an accountant, useSam’s List!
